Fenofibrate (nanoparticles)
Indications/Uses
Severe hypertriglyceridaemia w/ or w/o low HDL-C. Mixed hyperlipidaemia when a statin is contraindicated or not tolerated. Mixed hyperlipidaemia in patients at high CV risk (eg, dyslipidemia in DM) in addition to a statin when triglycerides & HDL-C are inadequately controlled.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Photoallergy or phototoxic reaction w/ fibrates or ketoprofen, gallbladder disease. Allergy to peanut or arachis oil or soya lecithin. Hepatic insufficiency. Severe chronic kidney disease.
Special Precautions
Treat secondary causes of hypercholesterolemia prior to fenofibrate therapy. For hyperlipidemic patients, estrogen may raise lipid values. Monitor liver & renal functions. Galactose & fructose intolerance. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Elderly >70 yr.
Adverse Reactions
GI signs & symptoms; cutaneous hypersensitivity; increased transaminases; muscle disorders.
Drug Interactions
Potentiated effects of anticoagulants. Nephrotoxicity w/ cyclosporine. Increased risk of serious muscle toxicity w/ 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG CoA) reductase inhibitors.
